Emory University is showing a generosity of spirit. It just recently announced that they will be funding the 100% financial aid packages of illegal aliens based on need.
The reaction of international students who entered the country legally – they did not comment on the issue.
All of the international students would have been expected to pay for their full tuition, but Emory will be making some of the undocumented undergraduates an exception where the ‘100% of demonstrated financial need’ will be covered by the university.
As seen from the statement in the university’s website, Emory claims to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need, specifically for undergraduate Undocumented Students, either with or without the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) who are admitted as first years, first-degree-seeking students, and those who graduated from a U.S. High school. This will be done through a combination of scholarships and grants, institutional work study for DACA students, and institutional loans. For those that are without DACA status, they may receive institutional loan to replace the typical work study award.
Megan McRainey who is a spokeswoman for Emory says that the said action was part of the school’s commitment to welcome students who come from diverse backgrounds.
In comparison, international students who are not considered undocumented students are not allowed such privilege – they will still be paying $70,000 per year in tuition if they wanted to attend this prestigious Georgian university.
While the school must think that this will be good for their image, some people are now being sarcastic about it. Here’s a joke about it – if you are are a foreigner and came to the country legally on a student visa, drop out of school and come back to US soil illegally, then reapply at Emory and tell them that you are ‘undocumented’.
The international students on legal student visas are smart though – they know that it is better to keep their mouths shut.
